CES 2015 Opens with Great Fanfare, But No Real Surprises

CES logoLike a carefully scripted political debate, Day 0 of CES (Day 1 for most of the press) opened with great fanfare…but offered no real surprises. Day 0 – officially known as Press Day – is an endless series of press conferences in which major manufacturers make their significant announcements and present their plans for 2015. And this year these press conferences, for the most part, followed their expected path – not even a Michael Bay meltdown emerged to spice it up a bit like last year!

Soon to be Resident on Russound Products – Spotify

Spotify logoIn a conference call with the press last Thursday, Russound executives proudly announced that they have closed a deal to offer Spotify streaming music content in Russound products. Spotify, one of the two most popular music streaming services in the United States, has very high international demand, Russound says – noting that this new agreement will help stimulate global demand for Russound products.

Strange Bedfellows? Dish Adds Netflix to Its Hopper Box

Dish logoDish Network Corp. announced today that it is the first major pay-TV provider in the U.S. to integrate the Netflix app into its set-top box. With this system, available on their second generation Hopper, users can access their favorite Netflix movies and shows, such as House of Cards and Orange is the New Black. And this Netflix content resides side-by-side with “linear” TV channels.

Thiel Says It Will Introduce New TT1 Speaker System at CES

Ingram Micro’s Q3 Financials Show Sales Up; Profits Down

Ingram Micro logoIngram Micro, Inc. released the financial results for their fiscal third quarter (the period ending Sept. 27, 2014) showing generally positive results. Sales for the quarter increased to $11.2 billion, a $1 billion or 11% increase over the $10.2 billion for the same period last year. According to Ingram Micro CEO Alain MoniĆ©, the increase was due primarily to “new wins” and “strong market share.”

But while gross profits were up, gross margins, operating income, and net income were all down for the period…and that fact led us to take a closer look.

You Knew It Was Dying, But LG Makes It Official – Plasma is Dead

LGs logoYesterday in South Korea, LG Electronics made formal what we all knew was coming – they are ending production of all plasma display panel products. Even though we knew it was coming, somehow…it still hurts. We’ve had many an engineer tell us the plasma was the most accurate picture available – many saying they own it themselves. Certainly, they are sure to be ruing this day.

Is Beta Better? Yamaha Launches First Earphones with Beta-Titanium Tubes

Yamaha Corp. announced today that it has launched a new line of earphones that includes a model with what it claims is the “world’s first” to use a beta-titanium sound tube. Yamaha’s EPH-M200 also features a “large-caliber” or diameter driver for better quality sound – and features a striking design available in three different colors.
