Value of EEX Stock Increases Nearly 19% on the Announcement

Emerald Holding Inc., the parent company of Emerald Expositions, a division that owns the CEDIA Expo trade show and CEPro media, announced its results for the first quarter of its fiscal 2022 year today – and these results clearly showed a strong rebound from the last two COVID-19 impacted years. With both revenues and earnings showing substantial increases, Emerald’s President and CEO HervĂ© Sedkey stated that “…we are in the midst of a robust recovery.”

Emerald on the Road to Recovery as Live Events Restart, But It’s Bumpy

Emerald Holding Inc., [NYSE:EEX] parent company to Emerald Expositions, which itself is the parent company of CEDIA Expo, and CE Pro (and other former EH Publishing properties) announced this morning their financial results for both their fourth quarter and full year, fiscal 2021. As the company has begun to restart their live in-person events, they reported a revenue gain over fiscal 2020 – a year of almost total lockdown and the absence of live events.

But the gain seems surprisingly small.

Emerald Says Fiscal ’21 Q3 Revenues Up & Losses Down as Live Shows Restart

CEDIA Expo 2021 staged by Emerald

But Were Things as Rosy as Its Report Suggests?

Emerald Holding, Inc. [NYSE:EEX] (Emerald), formerly Emerald Expositions and owner of the CEDIA Expo and CE Pro, announced this week that, thanks to the restart of live events in the third quarter of fiscal 2021, they were able to see a substantial reduction in their net losses on a significant revenue gain as compared to the same quarter in 2020 – the year of COVID shutdowns. While the company is still battling its event cancellation insurance providers in a California court for reimbursement for past canceled and impacted events, they say that they see the road to recovery ahead.

CEDIA 2019 IRS Filing Reveals a $3.7M Deficit; Org Dubs It a Transitional Year

A past CEDIA Expo

CEDIA recently filed their Form 990 with the IRS – a required filing by non-profits disclosing key financial data – and for the first time in a while, I found some interesting and somewhat confusing things in there. Yes, I obtain the organization’s 990 filings every year just to get a sense of how things are going. Like all of us, the organization is filing for, at best, the previous year and often they request and receive an extension. Hence, we are just now getting a glimpse of their 2019 results…and it was an eye-opener.

See what the CEDIA interim co-CEOs told me about 2019

Savant’s Virtual Expo Delivers a Powerful 1-2 Punch That Just Knocks Me Out

October 6, 2021 by Ted Leave a Comment

Online home of the Savant Virtual Expo 2021

As the first and one of the most prominent brands that decided to pull out of the recent CEDIA Expo in Indianapolis last month, Savant based their difficult decision on placing the safety of their employees and customers as their key concern in a time of surging Delta-variant COVID infections. But that decision did not mean that they didn’t want to communicate with their dealers about the many exciting developments at the company. So Savant developed a powerful two-pronged approach (the 1-2 punch I mentioned) to deliver their dealers a better – virtual – trade show.

Who Owns the CEDIA Expo? And Other Important Questions of Context

September 29, 2021 by Ted 2 Comments

CEDIA Expo 2021

As I am sure that most readers of this post will know, during CEDIA Expo at the beginning of September, I published a continuously updated post tracking which previously announced exhibitors subsequently made the decision to pull out of the event as the COVID Delta variant raged on. A remarkable realization occurred as I worked on that post, literally speaking with dozens, if not hundreds, of exhibitors and attendees for that event – many of them were confused about who owned the CEDIA Expo!

See why who owns the CEDIA Expo matters…

Emerald, Calling CEDIA Expo ‘Solid,’ Releases Numbers That are Sobering

Emerald Expositions on Monday put out a final recap of the CEDIA Expo 2021 that took place earlier this month and while Group Vice President Jason McGraw called it “…a solid event,” the numbers they revealed told a much more sobering tale. Still, I need to say up front that I am actually impressed they released data from the event rather than the hazy and rough estimates as they have done in the past. It’s at least a step in the right direction towards some sort of transparency.

CEDIA Expo Attendee Videos Show Wide Open Aisles, Draped Empty Halls, and Sparse Attendance

CEDIA Expo on-site registration
On-site registration, opening day [Photo: anonymous show attendee]

In a post yesterday, I suggested that the evidence seemed pretty clear – this year, attendees would find a very different CEDIA Expo. Today, the opening day of the event has seen a few videos and photos uploaded on Facebook, YouTube and other social media sites which seem to suggest that this is indeed a very different Expo.

CEDIA Expo Opens with Few Exhibitors; Not 500, Not 242, Only 76 Booths Remain

August 31, 2021 by Ted 7 Comments

CEDIA Expo 2021 floorplan
Looks like lots of room for hospitality at CEDIA Expo 2021

CEDIA Expo opens this week, with education sessions starting today and the show floor opening tomorrow. As Strata-gee has been reporting, over the last three weeks literally hundreds of exhibitors have pulled out of the event over concerns surrounding the surge of infections due to the Delta variant of COVID-19. With Emerald expositions vowing to forge ahead with the event no matter what, attendees to the event – whether many or few – will find themselves at a very different CEDIA Expo.
