AudioControl was Out of Control at Expo 2015

November 11, 2015 by Ted Leave a Comment

AudioControl booth at 2015 ExpoAudioControl’s booth was consistently busy with lots of integrator traffic at last month’s CEDIA 2015 Expo. Much of this traffic was due to the fact that the company was showing several recently announced new models for the first time.

Artison’s Matthew LaBruzzo shows the Nano Backpack

One of the neatest solutions we saw at the 2015 CEDIA Expo was Artison’s clever new product called the Nano Backpack WP (WiSA™ Powered). Don’t let its diminutive size fool you – the Backpack solves a huge problem – how to add exciting theater surround sound without resorting to bulky, and (to consumers), ugly electronic components.

Wall Street Reacts to Negative Nortek Q3 Numbers; AVC Sales Drop 36.8%

November 5, 2015 by Ted 3 Comments

Company Blames Declines on ‘Negative Impact’ of United Technologies Unsuccessful Acquisition Bid

Nortek's HeadquartersNortek, Inc. stock dropped more than 9.3% in early afternoon trading Wednesday in the wake of a report released by the company after the close of business Tuesday showing results for their fiscal third quarter. With sales and profit declines in key business segments – as well as for the company overall – it appears that Wall Street analysts are growing tired of waiting for the promised benefits of the company’s multi-year restructuring program, begun four years ago.

The company reported overall sales for the quarter of $618.5 million or 3.8% below the $642 million booked in the third quarter last year. The profit picture was even bleaker with a net loss of $14.4 million in the quarter this year as compared with a net profit in the quarter last year of $4.6 million.

Surprisingly, the AVC division saw sales drop an astonishing 36.8% to $30.1 million – well off the $47.6 million in the quarter last year – in the wake of the spin-off of TV One and the company’s exit from commercial AV businesses.

GoldenEar founder Sandy Gross

GoldenEar Technology, a high-end speaker manufacturer founded by renown speaker designer Sandy Gross, always seem to find ways to surprise us. The scrappy start-up did it again at the 2015 CEDIA Expo with their invisible, or “stealth,” Atmos theater demonstration…but not necessarily for the reason they thought!

See what caught our ears (and eyes) in GoldenEar’s Expo Atmos demo… [Read more…] about Is GoldenEar the Golden Ticket to Superior Theater Performance?

October 28, 2015 by Ted Leave a Comment

Photo of Mike FasuloAt this month’s CEDIA Expo, Sony Corp. professed to the attending media corps their continued commitment to the custom integration (CI) channel…trotting out none other than Sony U.S. COO and President Mike Fasulo (in photo at right) to make the case. But what really proved their case were the impressive product introductions – products clearly designed with custom integrators in mind.

CEDIA Expo Attendance Disappointingly Flat

October 23, 2015 by Ted 5 Comments

Photo of Expo crowdThis week, the Custom Electronics Design & Installation Association (CEDIA) announced the attendance for this year’s just-completed Expo, which they say came in at 18,700 attendees with 510 exhibiting companies. This level of attendance means only 200 people more visited the 2015 Expo – or a paltry 1% over the Expo attendance last year of 18,500 – and is disappointingly flat in a year that many hoped would show growth.

CEDIA Releases Key Findings of Size & Scope Survey and They are Surprising

October 23, 2015 by Ted 5 Comments

Market Survey coverAs is their normal practice at the annual Expo, CEDIA released key results from their annual Size and Scope of the Residential Electronic Systems Market survey which is conducted in conjunction with Parks Associates. However, what is not normal is that this year we heard these results from Dave Pedigo, CEDIA’s all-around tech guy – rather than from Erica Shonkwiler, CEDIA’s Market Research Manager who has apparently left the organization. But that switcheroo was not the only surprise, as some of the results were almost shocking.
