Onkyo Sets New Global Strategy Focused On Portables & Headphones

Onkyo logoOsaka, Japan-based Onkyo Corporation says it has set a new global growth strategy that will focus on launching portable music players and headphones, thanks largely to resources it received in its acquisition of Pioneer’s home AV division. In an interview appearing in Japanese media, Onkyo President Munenori Otsuki said the world is entering “the age of portable music players.”

JVC Kenwood logoJVC Kenwood Corp. released a summary of results for their fiscal year 2015, the year that ended March 31, 2015, and we continue to see positive profit results from their rather dramatic company-wide restructuring that had them abandoning many consumer categories and refocusing on more commercial enterprises. At Tidal – A Wave of Layoffs & New CEO

Tidal logoTidal, the music streaming service recently purchased by rap star Jay Z and more than a dozen of his closest music superstar friends, is already feeling the impact of its new ownership. Moving quickly, Jay Z and his team has taken several steps including dismissing the existing CEO Andy Chen and what the company says is a “handful” of other executives from the service.

Whew! First Hurdle Cleared: Banks Say They’ll Help Sharp

The first significant hurdle the company faced on their race to survival appears to be cleared. Media in Japan is now reporting that Sharp’s two banks will support it through a restructuring with a ¥200 billion convertible loan.

HTSA & Nationwide Partner to Create HTSN

HTSAlogoIn a joint release this week from both Nationwide Marketing Group (NMG) and the Home Technology Specialists Association (HTSA), the partners announced the creation of a new entity that they call the Home Technology Specialists of Nationwide (HTSN). The announcement, that surprised many in the industry…and had some scratching their heads trying to see the fit…said that this new alliance will offer new business opportunities for their respective members and vendors. It also, largely due to the size of Nationwide, creates the “largest buying and marketing collaboration” in the industry.

Sharp Expected to Report 200 Billion Yen Loss

This report is based on unnamed sources and appeared in the Nikkei.

Smarmy smugness notwithstanding, Apple executives must be getting at least a little nervous. As we recently reported, their launch of the new Apple Watch saw a response that was tepid at best. As the press expressed a healthy dose of skepticism, Apple CEO Tim Cook noted with a touch of irony how the press has been wrong on most of the company’s launches of many products that went on to dominate their markets. IBM to Invest $3 Billion to Launch ‘Internet of Things’ Unit

International Business Machines Corp. – the company better known as IBM – announced this week that it will invest a cool $3 billion dollars (yes, that’s billion with a ‘b’) to launch a new division focused on the now rapidly emerging “Internet of Things” (IoT) market. IBM hopes to convince customers it is the expert they need when it comes to “gathering and making sense of the surge in real-time data” according to a Reuters report.
