Which Services Won the Streaming War in 2024?

I recently received the final data on SVOD (subscription video on demand) market share for 2024 for the top streaming service providers. This data came from JustWatch, an international streaming guide with 17 million monthly users in the U.S. and 55 million monthly users in 150 countries worldwide.

Streaming Service Subscriber Growth in U.S. Dropped by Half in 2023

In what may be another sign of the post-pandemic blues, data published this week by research firm Antenna showed that growth in streaming service subscriptions in the U.S. dropped by 50% in 2023. Some are saying the boom in streaming is over…or could it be an over-adjustment that will correct itself and return to growth again soon?

With Streaming Still Struggling, Spotify Announces 3rd Round of Layoffs

Spotify Technology, S.A. announced that it will lay off approximately 1,500 employees, or about 17% of its entire staff. The company says the cuts are necessary to adjust operations for a very different operating environment than it anticipated when it built staff to drive growth in 2020 during the pandemic.

These are not its first layoffs in 2023…

Research: Consumers Cut Back on Number of Streaming Services; Consumption Increases

TiVo research on consumers use of streaming services

A new study recently released by TiVo Platform Technologies (TiVo) – a subsidiary of Xperi, Inc. – called Smart TVs Paving the Way quantifies a marked shift in trends in consumer consumption of streaming entertainment – as well as spending on streaming services. Top findings noted a decline in both the number of services to which consumers subscribe and the amount of money they spend monthly to obtain such services.

Yet, the same study showed an increase in consumers’ average daily consumption of streaming entertainment content.

Pandora Music & Podcasts are Now Included with Russound MBX Streamers

Both the Russound MBX-PRE stereo preamplifier and the MBX-AMP stereo amplifier now have the Pandora streaming service included natively in the device.

Sony Group announced yesterday that it will invest no less than ¥2 trillion ($18 billion) over the next three years to turbo-charge the company’s transition from a consumer electronics powerhouse to a global leader in gaming, media, and services. The only hardware they are looking to equally dominate is the sensor business – and a potential entry into the general chip-making business (more on this later).
