Epic Saga of THIEL Continues as Gary Dayton Acquires Coherent Source Svc

One of the remarkable stories to emerge from the demise of high-end loudspeaker brand THIEL Audio, which went out of business in 2018, was the phoenix-like rising of THIEL Service from the ashes of the bankrupt company. Long-time head of service Rob Gillum, sensing the continuing needs of a significant installed base of THIEL owners, purchased service-connected assets out of the bankrupt company and launched the independent Coherent Source Service (CSS), a full-fledged repair center dedicated to servicing the ongoing needs of THIEL legacy model owners everywhere.

Now, in the wake of Rob Gillum’s recent retirement, CSS has been acquired by Gary Dayton, another long-time THIEL service executive (trained by Gillum), who seeks to carry on the mantle of offering THIEL owners ongoing exceptional service of THIEL legacy products.

Streaming Surpasses Linear TV in Viewership for the First Time in May

Beginning in 2021, Nielsen – a global leader in audience measurement – began tracking the share of viewership between legacy linear providers (broadcast and cable) and streaming services. Since the launch of that tracking, streaming has been continually gaining on linear TV. Now, the latest data from Nielsen shows that streaming has overtaken linear TV for the first time in May.

A Dramatic Finale: Judge Orders Lutron to Pay GeigTech *Double Damages,* Interest & Costs

In what has been one of the longest-running patent infringement cases I have ever reported on, GeigTech East Bay LLC vs. Lutron Electronics Co. Inc. finally wrapped up last week in the United States District Court in the Southern District of New York before the Honorable Judge Colleen McMahon who delivered a blistering Final Decision and Order full of fire and brimstone…for both parties. Know that as you read this report, you are reading about a case originally filed on June 12, 2018…that’s right, seven years ago!

Says Judge McMahon: “After two trials and many opinions over the past seven years, the Court assumed familiarity with the facts and major players involved in this case.” And you know what they say about familiarity – familiarity breeds contempt!

‘Legendary’ Judge Alsup Featured in Strata-gee May Go ‘Inactive’ in 2025

Law360, a legal newsletter, reported on Tuesday that U.S. District Judge William H. Alsup – a judge in the Northern District of California – has filed papers with the court notifying it that he will likely take “inactive status” sometime in 2025. Calling him a “larger-than-life jurist” who has presided over some of the most consequential cases in America, Law360 says Judge Alsup is “legendary” in the U.S. legal system. I concur…

Judge Alsup was featured in one of Strata-gee’s most popular stories ever written on patent battles, this one between Sonos and Google. There was a remarkable twist at the end of this story based on real-world detective work by Judge Alsup.

Masimo.com Has Been Down for ‘A Few Days’

For the last two days or so, I have been diligently attempting to find out what is going on at Masimo as the company’s main website – Masimo.com – has been down for at least the last 2½ days (as of the time of this writing on mid-day Thursday)! The only thing visitors find when they navigate to the site is the “be back shortly” message shown above, along with a Masimo logo above it.

This past Sunday, on the eve of this week’s launch of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025, the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) released updated projections for total Tech industry sales in the year, as is its custom. According to the trade association, total Tech industry sales are expected to reach $537 billion – the highest level in history.

I first heard about Savant’s interest in energy for the home back in 2018 when a company representative walked me through the Racepoint Energy booth at CEDIA Expo 2018. Racepoint Energy was a sister company to Savant and the two were partnering on creating new concepts in automating, monitoring, and controlling power as part of a smart home system. Ultimately, the two companies would merge to become Savant Power which turbocharged the development of deeper integration and automation of energy solutions for the now smarter smart home.

As a general interest news media outlet, Time covers a wide spectrum of suggested “bests” in a wide range of product types, but AV was definitely included.
