February 25, 2021 by Ted 7 Comments

By now you most likely have heard that Fry’s Electronics, a large electronics retail chain that featured big-format store footprints and often dramatic designs in a variety of wacky themes, has officially closed their doors. Since almost all of their stores were west of the Mississippi River – 31 in total across nine states at its high water mark – most of those bemoaning this loss are westerners…especially Californians.

But the fact is this is hardly surprising news as Fry’s has been basically a zombie for at least two years now.

In fact, actual performance came in so much stronger than the company had originally anticipated, that after just this first quarter of the year they announced they were revising and raising their guidance for their anticipated revenues and profits for the remainder of the fiscal year.

But were there any dark clouds in the super sunny Sonos report?

Sony’s Strategic Shift From Hardware to Services Pays Off; It Now Projects Record Profits

February 4, 2021 by Ted Leave a Comment

Like the hero in their anime movie Demon Slayer, Sony has blown away investors with their latest (and probably last) revision to their fiscal year net profit estimate. Announced on Wednesday, the company now says that it forecasts that it will set a new all-time record net profit for the fiscal year that ends in March. The major reason? A shift in focus away from hardware to services and content revenues and profits.

Closing a Separate Audio & TV Factory in Brazil as Well

Sony Corporation has two large factories in Malaysia – one manufacturing audio products, and the other manufacturing predominantly video products. A new report out of Japan indicates that the company plans to close its audio factory in Malaysia by no later than the beginning of 2022 – or in other words, during the upcoming year of 2021. This move is likely a result of a previously announced strategic refocusing on businesses other than a/v electronics at the major consumer electronics manufacturer.
