Netgear announced that it has received conditional approval on its routers from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). This approval from regulators, the company says, means that dealers and consumers can rest assured that it is safe to buy, sell, and use Netgear routers which are now exempt from the recently announced ban on foreign-made routers by the U.S. government.
Who else has received FCC conditional approval?

Netgear was the first router company to receive this conditional approval of its consumer retail routers by the FCC. The company immediately began publicizing the news, seeking to reassure all customers and partners that it is safe to use Netgear routers; they are emphatically NOT part of the FCC ban.
Netgear CEO Says This Approval Means It Is ‘A Trusted Consumer Router Company’
In a letter signed by Netgear CEO CJ Prober, which was widely distributed on the internet, Prober announced the news of the FCC’s conditional approval awarded to the company. He characterized the news as meaning the FCC is saying Netgear is “…a trusted consumer router company.”
Prober then added, “We hope this recognition gives you added peace of mind – knowing that the network powering your home meets rigorous standards.”
In March, The Government Made Its Move
Just last month, in March, the government stunned the industry by releasing a call for stronger security standards for certain infrastructure technology. Noting a security risk, the government banned many of these items. Added to that list were consumer routers, like those used extensively in the custom integration industry.
Pandemonium ensued, as integrators began reaching out to their suppliers to gain an understanding of just what this all meant – as most of these goods come from overseas manufacturers…including those based in China. What were we to do, many asked.
Well, at least in regard to Netgear, we seem to have an answer.
FCC Awards Conditional Approval to Netgear Routers

This [action by the U.S. government] aligns with our security-first approach, and we believe the steps the FCC are taking will help ensure the security of your digital front door and home networking products.
As a U.S. founded and headquartered company, NETGEAR is aligned with the vision for a more secure digital future for our customers. For the last thirty years, we have been, and continue to be, committed to leading the consumer router category for the United States and setting the bar for quality, performance, innovation and security.

I’m sure that Netgear was not the only brand seeking such certification. Most likely, more announcements from other companies will begin to appear. As of the middle of the week this post was published, the only other name on the list was Adtran.
For now, Netgear appears to be first out of the gate.
