In 2001, Michael Malcolm, Cheena Srinifasan, and Dan Collens came together to create something that didn’t exist in the industry at that time: a home-based movie server that stored and served customers copied DVD content on-demand in home theaters (and throughout the home). They called it Kaleidescape.
A Bumpy Road to Success
It would be a bumpy ride to the ultimate success the company enjoys today. As I alluded to above, the movie industry pushed back, believing a service that copies DVD content to be served across networks was a potential piracy nightmare. A legal challenge was launched that lasted for no less than ten years and resulted in a negotiated settlement that kept Kaleidescape alive, albeit with a different operating process.
Battle wounds behind them, today most integrators believe that Kaleidescape is the best way to serve a wide range of the finest movies with reference-grade visuals and the highest fidelity sound in the industry.
